Here are some words of wisdom about finding profitable niches:

It’s always easiest when it comes time to develop your website if you choose a topic that you are interested in and already have knowledge about. So before you dive into finding things to sell I recommend that you pull out a pen and paper and start jotting down areas you are already a subject matter expert in as well as topics you have an interest in and begin there.

However, having recommended that you begin with a topic where you are already knowledgeable, you can target industries that you no nothing about and as you go through the steps of researching markets and producing content in for your website you will soon be a subject matter expert and know more about the topic that 90% of the people searching for what you have to sell because of all the research you’ve done.

Let’s get started on how to find items to sell that could be profitable for you to sell.

How to Find Profitable Items to Sell Using Amazon.com

Finding items that are already top sellers is quite simple using Amazon.com, this top internet shopping site shows you a list of the best selling items making this part of doing your online market research very easy!

From this point on, you are going to learn how to find items to sell by example using the Electronics & Computers category for demonstration purposes and this category has been chosen as an example because one of my favorite things to buy is home electronics. Yes I am somewhat of a gadget geek, so I am going to use that for an example of finding profitable products to sell.

Here are the high levels steps to finding profitable items to sell:

    1. Go to the Amazon site directory here -> http://www.amazon.com/gp/site-directory
    2. Click on a category that interests you.
    3. Drill down into sub-categories
    4. Create a list of the best selling items in that category

As I drilled into the Electronics sub-categories on Amazon I noticed there was a section devoted to video projects and that’s something I am personally interested in, so from the Amazon home page here is how I got to this section, I’ve clicked on:

Under Shop by Department – Click on Full Store Directory as shown below:

Using the Amazon Directory to Find Profitable Products to Sell Online

Next, under the Electronics & Computers category I clicked on Home Audio & Theater as illustrated below:

How to Find Top Selling Electronics

Now click on the Video Projectors link as shown below:

Top Selling Video Projectors
Now you can start creating a list of products to sell. I recommend that you use a spreadsheet to save your list of items you find as top sellers.

The first thing I notice on that page is the Epson VS230 SVGA 3LCD Projector is displayed as a #1 Best Seller as well as the AAXA P4 P4X Pico Projector so I am making note of those in a spreadsheet for when it comes time perform keyword research to research how much demand there is for a product.

Example 2 of a Best Seller

Example 2 of a Best Selling Product to Sell

The above mentioned products are displayed as #1 Best Sellers on the Video Projectors page and to find more top selling products you can find out what the top selling Video Projectors are by clicking on the “Best Sellers” link near the top of the page.

In this example of researching top selling Video Projectors, you will notice that when you click on “Best Sellers” it displays products from the top level category of Computers & Accessories, to get a list of the top selling video projectors you will need to click on the “Video Projectors” link that appears in the left menu as shown below:

List of Best Selling Products Online
For the sake of having an example to work with here is a list of the the video projectors I will use from the top 10 most popular video projectors on this page on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Best-Sellers-Electronics-Video-Projectors/zgbs/electronics/300334/ref=zg_bs_nav_e_2_541966

    1. ViewSonic PJD5134 SVGA DLP Projector
    2. Epson VS230 SVGA 3LCD Projector
    3. BenQ W1070 1080P 3D Home Theater Projector
    4. ViewSonic PJD7820HD
    5. Epson EX7220 Wireless WXGA 3LCD Projector
    6. BenQ W1080ST 1080p 3D Short Throw DLP Home Theater Projector

    9. Epson PowerLite 1761W Projector Ultraportable WXGA 720p Widescreen 3LCD Projector
    10. Optoma HD131Xe 1080p

You can also get a list of best selling items from Amazon by clicking on a category and then at the top of the page click on “Best Sellers”. The only problem with that is only the best sellers from the top level category are shown however it’s still a good idea to get a list for the best sellers within the top level category.

For training purposes, I am going to stay focused on researching video projectors. However, you should spend quite a bit of time digging through various categories and sub-categories to find an item you can handle thinking about and I say that because you are going to be “living and breathing” this business as you go through the market demand research, putting together your site content plan, creating content for your website or blog and ultimately marketing your site.

So be careful now to choose a niche you can handle thinking about each and everyday of your life as you work towards achieving success online!

That’s an important tip I’d like to share with you, stay focused on a specific niche especially when you are first starting out because if you don’t stay tightly focused it will become too overwhelming for you later on.

Now we have a list of items to sell that have profit potential and that takes us to the next module on how to research market demand for these products by conducting keyword research.

Yes, finding potentially profitable products to sell is that simple. So what are you waiting for? Jump in and get started on your path to success right now!
